Dog Treats 2
1 package of active dry yeast
1 teaspoon of sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups whole-wheat flour
2 cups cornmeal
2 cups uncooked old-fashioned oats
1 cup loosely packed chopped fresh mint leaves
1 cup loosely packed chopped fresh parsley leaves
1/2 cup of toasted wheat germ
14 oz. premade Watkins
Beef Soup & Gravy Base
3/4 cup milk
In a large bowl combine lour, whole-wheat flour, corn
meal, oats, mint, parsley and wheat germ. In another small bowl, combine yeast, sugar and
1/4 cup warm water. Let it stand until yeast foams - about 5 minutes. Once it foams, add Watkins Beef Soup & Gravy
Base and milk until well blend. Kneed dough for about 2 - 3 minutes.
After foaming, use a wooden spoon (no metal) to stir in
yeast mixture, beef broth and milk until all is mixed well. Knead the dough until blended,
which should be about 2 and a half minutes.
Divide dough in half and cover the part your not using
with plastic wrap to keep from drying. On a floured survace, roll the other half until
it's 1/4" thick. Cut with dog bone shaped or other cookie cutters.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 - 40 minutes, depending
on the size of the treat. To ensure dryness, turn off the oven and leave for about an
hour. Remove from oven and completely cool on a wire rack. Store in an air tight
container. While these should keep for 3 months, they should be gone before that!
To give as a gift, put treats in a cello bag
and tie with a bow!
