Spice Sugar Cookies

This recipe was sent to me by a customer, Holly W. She found it in an old Watkins cookbook that belonged to her grandmother, Gertrude HasBrouck, from ClarkLake Michigan. It has the byline of Elaine Allen who was the food editor at Watkins many years ago.

2 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp. Watkins Baking Powder, aluminum free
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. Watkins Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Watkins Cloves
1/4 tsp. Watkins Allspice
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 Egg, beaten
1 teas. Watkins Vanilla, Original Double-Strength
1 Tbsp. cream

Sift 1 & 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, salt & spices together. Cream shortening and slowly beat in sugar. Add egg, beat briskly. Stir in Watkins Vanilla and cream. Add remaining flour, just enough to roll out dough. Chill several hours.

Roll 1/8 inch thick on a lightly floured board. Use floured cutter and place on a ungreased baking sheet. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and bake 8 minutes in a 375 degree oven
