Cilantro
Most people
either love it or they hate it. While Cilantro looks like parsley with curly leaves, it
has it's own unique taste that has been described as everything from "old and
musty" to "citrus". Cilantro first became popular in Chinese cooking over
2,000 years ago. It is commonly used in stir fries and soups. Cilantro is also
popular in the Mediterranean, India, Thailand and of course Mexico. Cilantro is essential
in Mexican salsas and bean dips.
Cilantro adds a unique flavor that perks
up soups and stews as well as chicken, fish & meat dishes. The dried leaves
can be brewed into a tea that is a sedative and is very soothing. It's properties also
make it an effective mouthwash and it has been used to ease menstrual cramps. To make a
medicinal tea, use 1 teaspoon of dried Cilantro to about 1 cup of boiling water. Let it
steep for 5 minutes and drink 3 cups a day at mealtime.
Cilantro by another name is also Coriander.
Coriander is the seeds of the Cilantro plant and is often used in baked goods for a unique
flavor.
