Work AT Home or Work FROM Home
by Linda Sikut

Do you know the difference? A lot of women work FROM home but not very many actually work AT home. Working AT home means working for someone else but doing the work at home. It might be that you have worked for someone for a long time and when you decide that you want to work from home your employer will allow you to telecommute. You might also have worked as a medical transcriptionist and the company has decided to have their employees work at home instead of paying the overhead of an office. You might work for someone doing sales who prefers that you work at home, once again to save the expense of an office. These situations do exist but telecommuting positions are very, very difficult to find.

There are also lots of women who work AT home by developing web sites and selling ads that provide an income. These ladies work at home but they own their own business. They must have sales and administrative skills, as well as web site development and promotion skills. Some people develop promotion skills and earn an income promoting other people's web sites. Working AT home requires specialized skills that entices others to pay for work that is done. Many of the ladies listed in my Friends & Resources section have developed businesses that they work AT home.

Working FROM home generally means that you own a business that sells a product or service. Normally sales are generated on the phone, at home shows, at business shows, through word of mouth, through catalog sales, etc. There are two types of work from home business that I'll include here. With one type you start a business based on something that you already do. For example if you are a crafter, you might start a business selling crafts. If you love to garden, you might start a business gardening for others as a service. There are a lot of great businesses that you can start using the skills you already have. The other type is by becoming a distributor for a company that provides you with the products or services. There are many companies that offer distributorships and most offer a multi-level marketing plan. For example, if you start an Watkins business there is the direct selling part where you sell to your customers and there is the multi-level part where you earn a commission when you help others learn to gather their own customers and sell to them.

Whichever type of work FROM home business you choose, the key word is work. Nothing happens and no income is generated without work. You will need to carve time out of every day to work on your business. You may need to learn phone skills or sales skills. You will need knowledge of the product or service that you sell and you'll need to be ready to answer the questions of others.
